Despite only announcing one weekend at the close of a YouTube broadcast on Sunday night, the Ultra Music Festival may indeed be a doubleheader again in 2014, organizers told Billboard.biz.
“The 16th Annual Ultra Music Festival will take place March 28, 29 & 30, 2014,” Russell Faibisch and Adam Russakoff said in a statement. “Dates for the additional weekend are pending the approval of the City of Miami Commission and will be released as soon as they are available.”
The dance music festival went from one to two weekends for the first time this year with great success: It reported 330,000 total attendees over the course of its six days, or an average of 55,000 per day – right around venue Bayfront Park’s capacity for the event. The number is also conveniently just 10,000 higher than Electric Daisy Carnival’s reported attendance for 2012 (over three days at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway), making UMF the biggest dance festival in the country.
But troubles with the city have plagued the fest in recent years, culminating in an 11th hour move by Miami Commissioner Marc Sarnoff in January of this year to attempt to block its additional weekend. He eventually relented with two conditions: The festival pay $500,000 to a special City of Miami police fund, and seek the commission’s approval prior to announcing or selling tickets for a second weekend in 2014.
