In what appears to be a first for the company, Spotify has directly emailed Foo Fighters marketing material to the band’s top listeners on the service.

This could be a significant development for record label promotional campaigns in future.

Up until now, Spotify has not allowed rights-holders to hit members of its database with targeted marketing based on their listening habit.

The Foo Fighters email comes direct from Spotify, rather than the bands’ label, Columbia.

“YOU ARE RECEIVING THIS EXCLUSIVE EMAIL OFFER BECAUSE YOU ARE ONE OF THE FOO FIGHTERS’ TOP LISTENERS ON SPOTIFY.”

“You are receiving this exclusive email offer because you are one of the Foo Fighters top listeners on Spotify,” says the mail.

UK fans are then told: “This weekend, Foo Fighters are playing The National Bowl in Milton Keynes and Spotify wants to send the top listeners to the show.

“Spotify and Foo Fighters are contacting the biggest fans on Spotify for an exclusive offer to win tickets and limited edition items from the band.”

The fact the mail has been sent from Spotify and not a third-party is particularly significant in the wake of Daniel Ek’s apology for the wording of the company’s new privacy policy.
