Samsung reportedly paid $5 each for a 1 million copies of Jay-Z’s upcoming Magna Carta Holy Grail album. But, Hova won’t be able to write “new rules” regarding album sales and the charts. According to SoundScan,  the mogul won’t be able to claim instant platinum status on July 4. MTV News followed up with Nielsen SoundScan reps, digging up that the information tracking system does not count sales like the deal struck with Samsung. “Nielsen doesn’t count bulk sales,” a SoundScan spokesperson told MTV News. Essentially, if anyone cops a bulk amount of albums, Billboard’s policy for not counting bulk buys as sales stands in the way. Jay-Z is still determined to get his platinum shine by any means necessary. Taking to Twitter to chat up the upcoming release, the Brooklyn bomber is still hoping that his “new rules” mantra can shift the tide in his favor. “If 1 million records gets SOLD and Billboard doesn’t report it, did it happen? Ha. #newrules #magnacartaholygrail Platinum!!! VII IV XIII,” he tweeted yesterday (June 17). Universal Music Group is reportedly fighting to get the digital downloads obtained via the Magna Carta Samsung app counted as sales.
