“Inspiration before expiration.” It’s a goal lofty in expectations, yet it’s how I’ve viewed my place in the world for the better part of the past seven years. Around the time Take Care leaked, Gotty forwarded a video I’ve not only viewed hundreds of times since, but testifies to how talent remains God’s greatest gift and life’s finest reminder that once it’s gone, the pain never truly lessens.
The clip below of Static Major and Playa group-mate, Smoke, performing Smoke E. Diggerla’s “If U Scared, Say U Scared” was simple: a piano and two voices. The rendition was sampled on Drake’s soul-bearing number, “Look What You’ve Done,” and Static’s performance showcases talent, in the studio, working itself out sans distraction—much like a basketball player putting up shots in the gym or a Presidential candidate rehearsing a speech. We all remember these people for what they showcase on large, public platforms. However, it’s what they do to perfect their crafts when the world’s attention is elsewhere that generates greatness.
I’d be lying if I said I was a huge Static fan prior to his passing in February 2008. His work with Aaliyah was well known and respected. And his importance to Lil Wayne’s most popular single ever, “Lollipop,” helped to define house parties my senior year spring semester in college (that song was literally everywhere).
Static’s passing, in hindsight, has allowed the video to become more polarizing because, as hinted earlier, death continues being life’s greatest wake-up call. Who knows what living a full life actually means. Although, having talent speak long after your physical presence leaves Earth has to account for something in the grand scheme of things. Again, inspiration before expiration. “Y.O.L.O.” is cool, but that’s real motto.
