Tyler, The Creator has compared the way in which U2’s new album was automatically uploaded onto 500 million account holders’ iTunes on Tuesday to “like waking up with a pimple or herpes.”
The Odd Future rapper passed comment on the non-traditional way in which the Irish band released new album ‘Songs Of Innocence’ earlier this week.
Tweeting about the album on Friday (September 12), Tyler wrote: “Get off my fucking phone. You couldn’t come up with an actual marketing idea? Fuck @U2 I don’t want you. Fuck Bono. I didn’t ask for you, I’m mad.”
He then added: “I did not you were on my phone. Its legit like waking up with a pimple or like a herpe idk I did know you were on my phone. What the fuck.”
However, he appeared to come round to the idea shortly after and added: “Wow its kinda sick that they are on people’s phone out of nowhere……Hmm….I kinda like the idea kinda……Fuck Bono”

Bombay Bicycle Club were also critical of the release format earlier this week, telling NME that they found it to be “invasive”. Guitarist Jamie MacColl told NME: “I thought the move was quite invasive. A lot of people are up in arms because they don’t like U2. I don’t have an opinion on the band itself, but I do think the method is a little bit in your face.”
It was revealed on September 10 that free downloads of ‘Songs Of Innocence’ will be ineligible for the UK Albums Chart until it is released physically on October 13.
The album is the band’s first album since 2009’s ‘No Line On The Horizon’ and was recorded with producers Danger Mouse, Flood, Paul Epworth and Ryan Tedder. It features a tribute to The Clash, ‘This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now’, as well as ‘Iris (Hold Me Close)’, a song about Bono’s mother, who died when he was 14, while ‘Raised By Wolves’ is about a car bombing in Dublin.
Bono has said of the record: “It has a lyrical cohesion that I think is unique among U2 albums. I don’t want it to be a concept album, but the songs come from a place. Edge laughed and said this is our ‘Quadrophenia’. We could be so lucky.”
