The album that introduced America to K.Dot turns two years old today. So let’s toast (and take a pool full of liquor and dive in it) as we appreciate the Compton emcees landmark debut

A huge congratulations goes out to TDE’s superstar Kendrick Lamar. On this day in 2012, K. Dot released the classic LP known as Good Kid, M.A.A.D Citya landmark album in which many consider to be one of the greatest rap debuts since Nasty Nas‘ Illmatic project. The critically-acclaimed project helped Kendrick receive 7 Grammy nominations, including Album Of The Year. GKMC gave the listener a precise concept as Kendrick welcomed fans into the world of a young K. Dot attempting to survive in the mean and grimy streets of Compton, California. His lyrical perspective was a heavy eye and ear opener, and for the duration, the young emcee slowly evolves from a gullible, hardheaded, girl-craving young man into the wise, spiritual mature young OG we know today. The astonishing effort made listeners appreciate the raw, authentic storybook concept of rap which helped K. Dot rise prominence and be included conversations along with Drake & J. Cole as one of the leading artists of this generation.

Songs like “The Recipe“, “Backseat Freestyle“, “Poetic Justice“, “Swimming Pools (Drank) and “B**** Don’t Kill My Vibe” have made this project an album will be recognized 20-30 years from now. Chances are our grand children will sit back and feel the musical impact we felt upon it’s initial release. This important content has opened doors to other TDE artists such as SchoolBoy Q with his debut, Oxymoron, and even led to a little controversy (“Control”). GKMC has sold over 1.2 million copies, and Kendrick Lamar has set the bar extremely high for himself, especially considering his sophomore effort is expected to be out this year. Let’s see how TDE’s own will follow up. Only time will tell if it will outshine GKMC but for now…let’s salute to greatness.
