BMG called the deal “a marquee singing,” saying M.I.A. was “one of the great leaders and influencers and innovators in contemporary popular culture.”

The London-born rapper first attracted attention with her 2003 single “Galang” and singed to XL Recordings a year later. Her 2005 debut album, Arular, was a critical success, and 2007’s Kala and 2010’s Maya both charted. M.I.A.’s fourth album, Matangi, dropped in November 2013.

Overtly political, the singer has often cultivated controversy. In 2012, she attracted attention, as well as condemnation, when she extended her middle finger during a half-time performance at Super Bowl XLVI.
