Since Taylor Swift took a stand against Apple Music until they agreed to pay artists during the streaming service’s three-month trial period, support from fellow musicians keeps pouring in.
At a UJA Federation of New York luncheon honoring the charity work of Monte and Avery Lipman from Republic Records on Thursday (June 25), John Mellencamp addressed a crowd of about 600 music industry executives at the Pierre Hotel and applauded Swift’s efforts.
“Look at this little Taylor Swift taking a stand,” Mellencamp said. “Where were musicians in Jersey? In Minnesota? We didn’t want to have to fight, but we have to be ready to have that fight. Taylor Swift was courageous, man. But where was I, for that matter? I tip my hat to her, and everyone else should too.”
Following Swift’s open letter to Apple Music, the company decided to compensate artists during the trial period after all. And Swift announced Thursday that her latest album, 1989, will be available on Apple Music — the first streaming service to get the blockbuster album.
