When did you first become aware of the business side of the music?

I would say I learned the hustle at an early age. My dad didn’t just hand me the game. I was given summer jobs and tasks throughout my childhood that taught me through experience how this industry works. Once I pretty much had it figured it out, I was proud, my dad was proud, and I earned my keep.

What was it like when you were first growing up, having your father be who he is?

I was no different then any other kid growin up. I still had chores, I still learned life lessons…all that. I mean occasionally people would (and still) may treat me a lil different because they know who my dad is, but I honestly don’t think my childhood was any different than an average kid’s.

What was your first job in the music business?

Whoo! Man, talk about humble beginnings…now that I think about it I started my summer jobs at RapALot by doin lil chores around the compound; Sweepin floors and what not. Then eventually I was moved up to shipping and handling. Once I grew out of that I was put in marketing. I think my last position I can remember havin was in marketing.

When did you first meet Lil Wayne? Where did that relationship spark from? Did you both bond from being around the music industry at such a young age?

I can say I was probably closer to Baby (Birdman) first. I’d always had just seen Wayne around. We finally spoke at club appearance one night in Houston, and it kinda just fell in place from there. The music is what bonds all of us, regardless of the age.

Where did you first hear of Drake? Who brought him across your plate?

MYSPACE! I always browse through the internet lookin for somethin new. I found him myself. I sent him a message lettin him know who I was and that I wanted to work with him, get his music to some people I know.

How did you pitch him to Wayne?

At first I was tellin him about him like, “Yo, you really need to check this dude Drake out,” and Wayne wasn’t tryin to hear it. Then one day while leavin the Galleria, I just threw his CD in and let it play. He was like, “Wait..who is this?,” and I was like “Drake…the guy I been tellin you about.” Wayne told me to book him on the next flight to Houston.

Thoughts on Houston rap being so influential nowadays (i.e. ASAP Rocky, Drinking lean, Chopped And Screwed movement, etc.)

I commend those out there who show us love. If we didn’t let them acknowledge us, we’d have a hard time gettin some shine! As long as you pay homage and let your fans know where you got it from, it’s all love.

What’s next for you?

I’m always lookin for new talent. I recently signed a new artist, Monika Ashley, to my label Young Empire Music group. We have a couple more people on the way so keep watchin. I’m just trying to make some more history around here.
