On Oct. 8, Pusha T will release his long-awaited debut My Name Is My Name featuring the opening track “King Push.” While Joaquin Phoenix was originally credited for producing the song, he did not actually make the beat. In an exclusive interview with Rap-Up TV, the G.O.O.D. Music MC clears up the confusion.
It was Kanye West who got the beat from the Oscar-nominated actor. “Joaquin Phoenix gave the beat to ‘Ye, so when I got the beat from ‘Ye, it was, ‘Yo, Joaquin gave me this beat,’” he says. “So me, I’m just like, ‘OK, I know Joaquin’s into music and you know the whole thing,’ so I’m like, ‘Oh, damn.’”
The credit actually goes to the son of a famous rock star. “I believe it is the son of Lars Ulrich from Metallica,” says Pusha. “I hope I’m not wrong this time. It was mistaken because it came from Joaquin.”
While Phoenix did not produce “King Push,” MNIMN does feature production from heavy-hitters including Pharrell, Swizz Beatz, The-Dream, and Kanye West.
