Brought together by their love of unconventional hip-hop sounds and even-less-conventional letter capitalizations, hot-shit Atlanta producer Mike WiLL Made It and hot-shit Atlanta singer/rapper/weirdo iLoveMakonnen have united for the common good. The duo, self-christened as MikeWiLLMakonnen (natch), released their first collaboration today, “Wishin You Well.”
Unsurprisingly, it’s awesome. The Mike WiLL beat is one of his best of the year, a typically cavernous production with a wash of sitar echoes that make a surprisingly lush and tender bed for Makonnen to rhapsodize over. For those only familiar with Makonnen through “Tuesday” and “I Don’t Sell Molly No More,” it might be a little jarring to hear the singer in a lower octave, singing a relatively straightforward ode to an ex, but then the third verse starts off with “I remember that time in Seattle / You was thinking ’bout moving that cattle” — not a metaphor, talking about literal cattle — and any worries you might have about ILM turning into Trey Songz will be easily put to rest.
According to the duo (via Pitchfork), the song is “the first of what are many songs the two have been making together.” Best news we’ve heard all day, really.
