Paramita Sound

If you’re a vinyl enthusiast, or really a music fan of any kind, you need to check out Paramita Sound.

This West Village vinyl shop and record label, which opened in October, is merging new technologies with the classic record shopping experience. They’re not wallowing in nostalgia. Paramita manages to translate this century-old medium into something completely fresh.

The shop has lots of white space and clean lines – nothing to distract you from the music itself. There are iPad listening stations and a comfy lounge area, which definitely comes in handy on evenings when Paramita Sound hosts live performances by aspiring and professional DJs. Local legends regularly take a spin on the turntables. Detroit house music dynamo Peter Croce makes frequent appearances, along with established and up-and-coming DJs spanning a variety of genres.

They also occasionally hold BYO nights. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for details.

The mastermind behind this unique shop is Andrey Douthard, who worked as a D:Hive ambassador before opening Paramita. Andrey has a degree in music business, and and has more than a decade of experience managing bands and creating music.

In addition to the local vinyl you’ll find among Paramita’s thoughtfully curated selection, there are gems like a remastered boxed set of albums released by Nigerian synth-funk pioneer William Onyeabor between 1977 and 1985. For every classic record on the shelves, you’ll find brand new releases like Aphex Twin’s studio album Syro, with its electronic, ambient beats. This is where the best of old school meets new.

In Buddhism, paramita means perfection or completeness. It often refers to the practice of cultivating certain virtues – like generosity, truthfulness, and patience – on the path to enlightenment. You may not be able to achieve total enlightenment in this lifetime, but the perfect beats at Paramita Sound will make you feel pretty close.
