Sean Parker had some words for a crowd at a SXSW conference this week. Are we on the brink of another big label, start-up turned powerhouse showdown? Is Spotify in the wrong or are labels not compensating enough for streaming services in their current contracts? [DMN]
“There’s definitely some dissent brewing between the labels, the publishing companies and the artists, and really a lot of it has to do with older licensing schemes.
There are a lot of artists whose contracts are written in such a manner that they aren’t getting paid for what’s happening on streaming services.
So there’s blood in the water. There’s a war coming, and they’re going to have to deal with it. But Spotify has to remain neutral; the biggest contribution we can make is transparency.”
