The European Union has approved the acquisition of EMI Music Publishing by a consortium led by Sony Corp., with Sony/ATV acting as a critical participant and administrator. A few catalog divestitures were required, particularly those involving Virgin compositions and several superstar collections. The $2.2 billion acquisition now awaits US-based FTC approval, at which point a major consolidation and pare-down (including heavy layoffs) will likely commence.

Pandora‘s meltdown is taking a breather on Wall Street, thanks to an integration deal involving Dish Network. The deal, actually first disclosed at CES, puts Pandora stations into higher-end Dish packages. Pandora (P) ended Thursday trading close to $9.
Coke won’t be endorsing this anything soon, though the shadowy hacking collective Anonymous is now creating ‘Anontune‘. The idea is not to create a hacked-out Spotify clone, but rather to index and point users to a vast collection of already-hosted music. “Rather than focus on the music itself, Anontune will instead focus upon information about the music,” announced the group via video. “Information like were music is being distributed, how it is being used and how it is discovered.”
