Korean pop singer Psy is already an international Internet sensation thanks to his viral video for “Gangnam Style.” Now, he’s on his way to pop superstardom, thanks to the help of Scooter Braun, who signed the overnight sensation to his Schoolboy Records.
That puts Psy on Braun’s roster of A-listers that includes the Wanted, Carly Rae Jepsen and Justin Bieber. And, in a statement to MTV News, Braun opened up a bit more about why he wanted to work with Psy. “There is one reason to do this deal… to be a part of history, to do something no one has ever done before,” he wrote in an email, adding, “Psy is a guy you want to root for. I LOVE UNDERDOGS.”
Psy and Braun broke the news together on Monday, in a video in which they toasted to their new business relationship. “We’ve been hanging out in California for four days,” Braun said in the video. “And we’ve come to an agreement to make some history together and be the first Korean artist to break a big record in the United States.”
The signing comes hot on the heels of Psy’s rise as a viral smash thanks to his super kitschy, wacky clip for Psy’s “Gangnam Style.” Since it launched earlier this summer, it has surpassed 100 million views on YouTube. [MTVNews]
