Greg Thompson has been promoted to Executive Vice President of Capitol Music Group, chairman/CEO Steve Barnett announced today.
According to a statement, Thompson will serve as a senior member of Barnett’s executive team, overseeing Sales, Promotion, Marketing, Publicity, Creative Services & Video Production, Digital Planning & Production, Strategic Research and Insight, as well as shepherding the company’s brand partnerships through its in-house agency. He has relocated to Los Angeles and is based in the company’s iconic Capitol Tower.
The move is the latest for the new Capitol Music Group, which houses the properties Universal acquired in its purchase of EMI’s recorded-music division. UMG named Barnett chairman/CEO of CMG in late-November.
“I was highly aware of Greg’s accomplishments and stellar reputation within the industry before I came to Capitol, knowing he was instrumental in the success of Katy Perry, Lady Antebellum, Coldplay and David Guetta, among others,” Barnett said in a statement. “I realized very quickly that Greg would be a key member of my senior team as we build the new Capitol Music Group, and I couldn’t be happier and more grateful that he and his family have made the big move to the west coast. Our artists and the entire Capitol team are fortunate to have Greg as a leader in our company, and I congratulate him on this well-deserved promotion.
Thompson previously was EVP of Marketing and Promotion for EMI Music North America. He joined EMI as Executive Vice President of North America in 2008 after three years as Executive Vice President of Promotion for Island/Def Jam, where he worked with Rihanna, Kanye West, Mariah Carey, the Killers and others. He previously held senior posts at Elektra during an 11-year stint with the label; SBK Records, where he was SVP of promotion; and with Chrysalis Records, where he began his career in 1985.
