The Grammy Awards had the second largest audience for the awards broadcast since 1993, according to Nielsen updated preliminary live plus same day ratings, and set a new social TV record for an awards show.

The 55th annual Grammy Awards had more than 18.7 million social media comments, second only to the 2013 Super Bowl, and topping the social TV record it set last year by 44 percent, according to Bluefin.

The awards were watched by 28.37 million viewers on Sunday. Of those, 12.9 million viewers were in the 18-49 demographic. While last year sent all ratings number skyrocketing, the 18-49 demo numbers are the show’s best since 2004.

Compared to the 2011 ceremony, CBS reported that it was up 7 percent in households, 4 percent in adults 25-54, 1 percent in adults 18-49 and 6 percent in total viewers. [Billboard.biz]
