DFA Records, the New York-based, scene-defining record label founded by Jonathan Galkin, Tim Goldsworthy and LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy in 2001, is suing Goldsworthy in Mahattan Civil Supreme Court. The news was first reported by DNAinfo on early Monday morning.

DFA is accusing Goldsworthy of taking compensation for services he didn’t carry out, carrying outstanding loan debt, improper use of a DFA credit card and unsanctioned bank withdrawals.

The case seeks $93,899, as well as punitive and legal fees, from Goldsworthy, who DFA claims was in breach of contract and who used his position at DFA to secure himself “unjust enrichment.” DFA also claims that it attempted to resolve the dispute with Goldsworthy outside of the courts, but was “rebuffed.”

Three years ago, Goldsworthy decamped for Britain, reportedly giving no notice to his business partners. DFA manager Jonathan Galkin told Resident Advisor at the time that “Tim Goldsworthy moved away to somewhere in the United Kingdom, without informing anyone here at DFA.” In that same report, Goldsworthy had a different take on the situation. “I haven’t left. If that was the case then, well, Murphy’s never there, cause he’s always touring or in the studio, so that would mean he left, I don’t know, nine years ago or something?”

As recently as 2006, Murphy and Goldsworthy were roommates — at least on paper — living in Murphy’s Williamsburg apartment, according to a lawsuit filed against them and DFA in New York State Supreme Court, filed by Advanced Alternative Media that year seeking payment for unpaid management services. Prior to that, Murphy and Goldsworthy collaborated on celebrated records from The Rapture and the Juan Maclean. Goldsworthy has also worked with UNKLE and Massive Attack, most recently on the latter’s 2010 album Heligoland.

DFA, in association with the Red Bull Music Academy, is set to fête its twelfth year in business with a nine-hour show which will feature a set from James Murphy. As well, a screening of the new documentary 12 Years of DFA: Too Old To Be New, Too New To Be Classic is planned. The event is scheduled to take place at the Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn.
