Wind-Up Records has inked a deal with Clear Channel to share digital and broadcast radio revenue, becoming the latest independent label to strike such a deal with the broadcasting giant.
Details of the deal were not disclosed, but previous Clear Channel deals with record labels are known to pay a percent of advertising revenue whether a song was played on terrestrial radio of Internet radio. A directly negotiated deal for a digital performance royalty for sound recordings means Clear Channel will not have to pay a statutory performance royalty of 0.2 cents per stream. Wind-Up artists will receive royalties through the label rather than receive their share directly through SoundExchange. Owners of sound recordings and performing artists do not enjoy a performance royalty for sound recordings for terrestrial radio.
“Wind-up at its essence is an artist development company,” Wind-up’s Chief Executive Officer Edward Vetri said in a statement. “This partnership with Clear Channel will provide us a new and innovative platform to make our artists’ music more accessible to their fans. We believe growing digital radio is critical to artist development and are excited to be aligned with Clear Channel in its digital radio strategy.”
The Wind-Up roster includes Creed, Finger Eleven, Evanescence, Seether, O.A.R. and a number of developing artists such as Civil Twilight, Young Guns and Jillette Johnson.
Clear Channel had previously come to similar arrangements with Big Machine Label Group, Glassnote Entertainment Group, Dualtone Music Group, Robbins Entertainment, Naxos, DashGo and rpm Entertainment. [Billboard.biz]
