Dalton Sim came onto our show back in January, and we talked a lot about his work breaking Fun. One of our members asked Dalton what factored into building that success as an indie label act.
Did they have a bigger PR budget or have a connection to an unknown “gatekeeper” that fueled their radio play? Dalton talks about how the band in its early stages and how the band was funded by their management company to make the first record. He illustrates that they couldn’t get all the things that factored into their success early on. Radio wasn’t interested, nor was MTV or any of the other gatekeepers. But, Dalton made a decision to turn any NO into a YES. Often times, these were the well-considered NOs. MTV didn’t want to play them, but they would still go out to see MTV to make friends and make it personal with these people. Fun. saw the value in building relationships early on and nurturing them, which certainly paid dividends down the road! [RenmanMB]
