Lucian Grainge, Former Hulu CEO Jason Kilar Join DreamWorks Animation's Board of Directors

DreamWorks Animation SKG has announced that Lucian Grainge and Jason Kilar will be nominated to the company’s board of directors at its upcoming annual meeting of shareholders.

Grainge is chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group. He joined UMG in 1986 and oversees the company’s role as one of the few remaining music majors. Most recently, UMG purchased EMI’s recorded music division from Citigroup. Grainge also serves as a board member for Activision Blizzard.

Kilar was founding CEO of Hulu. In January, he resigned from his post after five years at the company, which grew fast but has faced profitability pressures from its owners. Before Hulu, Kilar had key leadership positions at Amazon.com, including as a GM of the digital giant’s domestic books, music and video businesses.

The two will be replacing Nathan Myhrvold, CEO of Intellectual Ventures who has served on the DreamWorks board since it went public in 2004, and Richard Sherman, who is the CEO of The David Geffen Co. and has served on the board since 2008.

DreamWorks was founded by media moguls Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen. After spinning out, the animation studio has been responsible for such films as Shrek, Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda.

“I am beyond excited at the prospect of welcoming Lucian and Jason to our board,” said DWA chief executive and director Katzenberg in a statement. “They are true superstars in their respective fields — Jason revolutionized how we consume content, and Lucian is one of the most innovative forces in the music industry. The addition of their expertise to our already incredibly strong board will help take the company to new heights as we continue to grow our brand.” [Billboard.biz]
