Selena Gomez flies 22-5 on the Social 50 chart this week, earning the singer/actress her highest rank (No. 5) since Nov. 24, 2012. The chart surge is owed in part to a performance of the track on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” (April 18), as well as residual buzz from its premiere performance on the MTV Movie Awards (April 14).
The Social 50 chart ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, Myspace and Instagram. The chart’s methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views, song plays and reactions.
The last time Gomez broke the top 10 was the week of March 2, where anticipation was running high for her then-upcoming role in the movie “Spring Breakers.” This charting week, she also announced pre-sale for her 2013 Stars Dance world tour. This news, combined with her “Dancing” gig, led to a 74% rise in conversation about the star during the week. That lift gave way to the addition of 757,000 new fans on the platform (a 361% increase over the previous week). She also added 85,000 new fans on Twitter (up 17%).
Gomez, however, falls 32% in overall plays for the week. Her decline is expected, as she’s stabilizing in plays after the debut of her single two weeks ago on Vevo.
David Guetta also bounds to the top 10 (23-9) after several teaser videos for his new single “Play Hard” were released. They helped Guetta accumulate 10 million plays on Vevo last week. The video activity generated buzz that led to a 58% increase in Facebook reactions, which gave way to Guetta adding 801,000 new fans on the platform during the week (a 252% increase over the previous week). He also adds 113,000 followers on Twitter (up 36%).
Also re-entering at No. 33 is Daft Punk, as its new single “Get Lucky” has received sustained social media buzz from the marketing campaign promoting the album that’s currently under way. At the end of the charting week (April 18), the track finally receives the boost needed to send Daft Punk onto the tally as the official audio for the track debuts on Vevo, helping to drive more than 3.5 million plays to the act’s channel and subsequently usher in 117,000 new overall fans.
Finally, PSY returns to the No. 1 spot thanks to the continued gains of his new single “Gentleman.” It’s his first week at No. 1 since finishing a 10-week run at the top last October. PSY added 719,000 new fans last week (up 86%) as the video for “Gentleman” passed 200 million global views.
As for the rest of the top 10, Rihanna drops 1-3 in the wake of PSY’s rise, while Justin Bieber climbs 3-2. Shakira inches up a spot (5-4) and Beyonce bounds back into the top 10 (13-6) as the Mrs. Carter world tour officially launches. Taylor Swift tumbles (2-7), as does Bruno Mars (7-8), leaving One Direction (4-10) to anchor the leader board. [Billboard.biz]
