Dan Reynolds, frontman of the chart-conquering rock band Imagine Dragons, will receive the Hal David Starlight Award at the upcoming Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala.
The award honors young songwriters who have made an impact in the music industry, which Reynolds certainly has. “Radioactive,” Imagine Dragons’ biggest hit so far, peaked at No. 3 on the Hot 100 and topped Alternative Songs and Rock Songs, setting a record for its 23 consecutive weeks atop the latter. Their success led to performances on awards shows like the American Music Awards and this year’s Grammys, where they performed alongside Kendrick Lamar.
The award was named in honor of Hal David, the late chairman emeritus of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, who was known for his support of young songwriters. Along with songwriting partner Burt Bacharach, he composed classics like B.J. Thomas’ “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head” and Isaac Hayes’ “Walk On By.”
Previous winners of the title include Rob Thomas, Alicia Keys, John Mayer, John Legend, John Rzeznik, Jason Mraz, Taylor Swift, Drake, Ne-Yo and Benny Blanco.
The gala is set for June 12 at New York City’s Marriott Marquis Hotel. The annual event — including an awards dinner and induction ceremony — is in its 45th year.
