Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes: Lollapalooza Security Guards Assaulted Me

Update: Lollapalooza has released the following statement regarding Friday night’s incident: “Late Friday night, we learned of an incident involving an artist and a security guard on site. Since then, we have been in contact with those involved and the authorities, as we work together to resolve the situation. As always, our top priority is to ensure the safety of everyone at the festival.”

Dev Hynes, the singer-songwriter behind the critically acclaimed indie act Blood Orange, claims that he and girlfriend Samantha Urbani were assaulted by security guards at Lollapalooza Festival on Friday (Aug. 1).

Hynes went public via Twitter this evening with what he claims happened after his band’s 4:45 p.m. set:


Although he does not mention where on the festival grounds these events occurred, he remarks “everyone saw it” in another tweet and says he plans to press charges.

According to Hynes and others, it appears Lollapalooza is deleting comments related to the incident:

During Blood Orange’s set Urbani performed alongside Hynes and urged the crowd to be aware of police brutality issues. Earlier in the day, Hynes wore a shirt dedicated to Eric Garner, Jordan Davis, and Trayvon Martin. Garner died July 17 after being put in a chokehold by a New York police officer. His death was officially ruled a homicide today.


Urbani noted via Twitter that after speaking with Lollapalooza, she learned the guards in question were “NOT Lolla staff, but privately hired for that stage.”
