Hailing from Brighton, U.K., Benji Boko has crafted a niche in the ever-changing genre of electronic music.
Known for energetic DJ sets that often encompass a few of his quirky remixes for the likes of Roots Manuva, Fatboy Slim, Chiddy Bang and Rizzle Kicks, the young afro producer is herald to be as much a festival DJ as he is a forward-thinking producer. Not one to shy away from unorthodox approach to production, Benji interpolates TV theme tunes and offbeat samples in his unique blend of boom-bap and bassline. While collaborations with Maxi Jazz of Faithless and Ricky Rankin of Roots Manuva show Benji to be established with some of U.K. underground music’s most prolific, the producer continues to experiment both in and out of the studio, with 2012’s “Picadilly Rave” flashmob in London’s city center serving as one of such examples. In our latest Music Essentials, Benji shows off some tools needed for him to pursuit his craft alongside a few tomes that provide words of inspiration.
