Kevin Saunderson’s been on the hunt for samples recently, visiting a Ford plant in his native Detroit as part of a new documentary.
The techno originator – part of the ‘Belleville Three with Juan Atkins and Derrick May – stepped inside Ford Motor Co.’s Michigan Assembly Plant with a film crew for a documentary focusing on the impact of techno in the city.
Although he wasn’t sure what the samples would be used for, he said the machinery and the sounds they caused intrigued him.
“It’s hard to say what it will be used for. You take samples, put it in the machine, and you never know what vibes it might bring. It could bring nothing, it could bring something amazing.
“It had nothing to do with music, but it actually does. The way (workers) use it is totally different than the way I’d use it.”
Having recently moved back to Motor City, after two years in Chicago, Saunderson also highlighted that the city’s still got plenty of musical talent to offer.
“Detroit is still moving and grooving. We’ve gone through a few generations and there’s a lot of young talent that’s coming up. It’s keeping the pulse going.”
