Christmas has dominated the holiday carol game for far too long. Where are all the songs about Pilgrims and turkeys and awkward dinner table conversations with idiotic relatives? “There are literally thousands and thousands of Christmas songs, but I think the closest thing we have to a song for Thanksgiving is the theme from Golden Girls,” says Jimmy Kimmel in the above clip from Tuesday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! “And that, to me, is unacceptable.” Singer Meghan Trainor helps remedy that problem, promoting her fake but funny new album, Thanksgiving Carols.
It’s an eclectic set, touching on a variety of prevalent holiday issues – from “My Flight Got Canceled in Denver (I’ll Be Sleeping at an Airport Quizno’s Tonight)” to “Uncle Dan Hates Obama (And Won’t Shut Up About Benghazi)” to “Grandma’s a Racist (Pass the Yams).” Trainor sings snippets from each track in the same smooth style that propelled her chart-topping 2014 single, “All About That Bass.” (The funniest part of the segment is that the album is “available at Walgreen’s.”)
Trainor released the booty-centric “Bass” in June and followed with the Title EP in September. Her third studio album, also dubbed Title, is set for release on January 13th.
“When the [“All About That Bass”] video first got sent to me, I cried,” the singer told Rolling Stone in October. “I remember being like, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore.’ And I edited the crap out of it: We need a different shot there, my face looks weird. And they did it for me, which is amazing. And now I look like a pop star! When I got signed as a songwriter, I immediately thought, ‘Oh, no one sees me as an artist because I don’t look good enough.’ So I shut down the whole idea. And now I hate that I ever doubted it. This is what I’m supposed to do.”
