Cole stops by the voice of NY to talk his David Letterman performance,  top five rappers, and a lot more in his first radio interview in months

Last night’s performance of “Be Free” on the Late Show with David Letterman left many people in awe. To speak about the performance and other hot topics regarding his new album 2014 Forest Hills Drive, J. Cole stopped by Power 105.1‘s studio earlier Thursday afternoon for an interview with Angie Martinez.

J. Cole revealed that he didn’t plan to perform his new “Be Free” verse until rehearsal.

“I was real nervous about that performance, super nervous, because I had never performed it before,” Cole said. ”I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to [mentally] go back to that place when I wrote that song.”

He described the performance as “absolutely the most important thing” he’s ever done. In addition, he touched on the recent controversy regarding his lyrics toward Eminem and Iggy Azalea, blaming the untruthful headlines (not from The Source) posing his verse as a supposed “Eminem” diss song, in order to take advantage of today’s click-bait system of media.

“The news ain’t set up to inform you, it’s set up to make money,” Cole said.

As Angie Martinez explains, publications often disregard their journalistic integrity in efforts to gain more clicks. This lack of judgement not only misinforms the public, but also blurs the message intended by J. Cole’s lyrics.
