Spotify launched on Sony’s PlayStation earlier this week in 41 countries – and it’s off to a flyer.
According to the company, 1.5m people activated its Spotify app – dressed up as ‘PlayStation Music’ – on their PS3 and PS4 consoles during its first day of availability on Monday (March 30).
Although it’s impossible to know how many of those were existing Spotify users – signing in to their account through a new device – it’s an undeniably impressive start for the app.
Especially when you consider that PlayStation’s previous streaming music option, Sony’s own Music Unlimited platform, only boasted around a million users at its height.
Music Unlimited, which was powered by Omnifone, was available in 19 territories before being switched off on Sunday (March 29).
Spotify on PlayStation Music will also become available on Xperia smartphones and tablets and eventually reach all 58 markets in which the streaming service is available.
At last count, Spotify announced it had 60m active users, with 15m paying subscribers. [Music Business Worldwide]
