Paul Rosenberg, Eminem’s longtime manager and business partner and president of Shady Records, has been appointed the new CEO of Def Jam Recordings. Billboard has confirmed the appointment, which will take effect at the beginning of 2018. The news was first reported by HITS.
Rosenberg will succeed Def Jam CEO Steve Bartels, who will stay in place until the transition. As the founder and CEO of the New York-based management firm Goliath Artists Inc., Rosenberg oversees the careers of hip-hop superstar Eminem, Danny Brown and others. In addition to launching Shady Records with Eminem and serving as producer of Eminem’s SiriusXM satellite radio station Shade45, Rosenberg has also garnered credits as an executive producer of such films as 8 Mile and Southpaw and for television shows including Showtime’s rap-battle reality series The Next Episode, MTV’s Gone Too Far and Viceland’s F*ck, That’s Delicious series.
Bartels has held the CEO post since April 2014. That’s when the pioneering hip-hop label returned to its roots as a standalone label within Universal Music Group following its tenure as one-half of the Island Def Jam Music Group. Founded by Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons, Def Jam is currently home to Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Big Sean, Alessia Cara and 2 Chainz, among other acts.
This is the latest of several key executive departures at Def Jam. Chris Atlas joined Warner Bros. Records in June as senior VP/head of urban marketing after nearly a decade with Def Jam, the last three years as executive VP of marketing. Just prior to that, veteran producer Dion “No I.D” Wilson (JAY-Z’s 4:44 album), previously Def Jam’s executive VP and head of all A&R activities, segued to Capitol Music Group as executive VP.
