Spotify will be the default music service on all future Samsung devices
Spotify has announced a new “long-term” partnership with electronics manufacturer Samsung, making the streaming platform the “go-to music provider” across all Samsung devices going forward. The partnership includes the brand’s newly announced Galaxy S9 smartphones, as well as the Galaxy Home smart speaker, which is a direct competitor to Apple’s HomePod. Spotify will come pre-installed with Samsung devices, and has also been integrated into Samsung’s “Bixby” voice-activated assistant.
“We believe that this significant long-term partnership will provide Samsung users across millions of devices with the best possible music streaming experience, and make discovering new music easier than ever—with even more opportunities to come,” Spotify CEO Daniel EK said in a press release. “Of course, it will also help artists reach new fans. Our goal has always been to make music accessible to everyone by giving a million creative artists the opportunity to live off their art and billions of fans the opportunity to enjoy and be inspired by it.”
A new report published by Citigroup earlier this month found that artists made only 12% of the total revenue generated by the music industry in 2017. The report found distribution services such as Spotify captured most of the revenue in the music industry last year.
