Although she has nine Grammy Awards to her name, there was no question as to the sincerity of Adele’s surprise when her song “Skyfall” won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song, Motion Picture.

“Oh my God!” the British singer squealed, telling the Beverly Hilton audience that she saw the evening as “a night out” for a new mum” and “was not expecting” to win.

And it seems she wasn’t expecting a ballroom brimming with A-listers, either. “We’ve been pissing ourselves laughing,” she cracked from the stage. Thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, she added, “Never thought I’d say that,” then complimented Skyfall’s star, telling Daniel Craig, “You’ve been a wonderful Bond.”

“Skyfall” was up against “For You” by Keith Urban from Act of Valor, “Not Running Anymore,” by Jon Bon Jovi, for Stand Up Guys, Taylor Swift’s “Safe & Sound” from The Hunger Games and “Suddenly,” a new song written for Les Miserables.

Mychael Danna won the score award for his work on Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi,” which he referred to as a film of a lifetime. For both Danna and Adele, the Golden Globe nominations were their first. His song from the film was also nominated for Best Song.

The win makes Danna the front-runner in the score category for the Academy Awards and the winner of the Globe the last five years has gone on to win the Oscar as well. Last year, Ludovic Bource won both awards for “The Artist.”

Speaking to reporters after her win, Adele again blamed her “over-excitement” on her “first night out since I had my baby.” Earlier, she duly credited her boyfriend for encouraging her to write the song. She later added, “I would have been proud of the movie if it did nothing.”

Adele’s process, she explained, took her out of her comfort zone. “Normally, I write about my misery,” she said, “and this time I wrote a song according to someone’s script. That was very challenging but exciting as well. … I took the risk and I’m so proud of it, but I really really didn’t expect it.”

At the upcoming Academy Awards (ABC, Feb. 24), Adele’s “Skyfall,” which was produced by Paul Epworth, is up against “Before My Time” from Chasing Ice, “Everybody Needs a Best Friend” from Ted, “Pi’s Lullaby” from Life of Pi and “Suddenly” from Les Miserables.

Adele released “Skyfall” on October 5 to much fanfare and it became the singer’s first single to debut in the Top 10 on the Hot 100, peaking at No. 8. In winning the category, Adele bested fellow recording stars Jon Bon Jovi, Taylor Swift and Keith Urban.

The Golden Globes traditionally lean toward pop music figures who do not work often in film in the song category and have overlapped with the Oscars only two times in the last 10 years.

At the Academy Awards,  Danna is nominated alongside Dario Marianelli (“Anna Karenina”), Alexandre Desplat (“Argo”), John Williams (“Lincoln”) and Thomas Newman (“Skyfall”); Adele and Epworth are contending for the song Oscar with Danna and Bombay Jayashri (“Life of Pi”), J. Ralph (“Chasing Ice’), Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg and Herbert Kretzmer (“Les Misérables”) and  Walter Murphy, Seth MacFarlane(“Ted”). [Billboard.biz]
