Big Deal Signs Up With BMG

Big Deal Music brings together veteran industry executives in a new music publishing firm, which has just cut an administration deal with BMG for North America and parts of Europe. The company brings under one roof Chrysalis Music colleagues Kenny MacPherson, Dave Ayers and James Cerreta with artist manager Michael McDonald and publisher Pete Robinson.

Big Deal has three offices: one in Sherman Oaks, Calif., with four staffers; one in Nashville with three; and a staffer in New York. The company is being financed by the principals and a private investor, MacPherson says.

Initially, Big Deal plans to grow — which MacPherson says shouldn’t be too difficult, since the current staff is comprised of all A&R guys — while marketing will be done by BMG.

Artists already signed to the Big Deal roster include My Morning Jacket, Jim James, The Black Angels, Ethan Johns, Missy Higgins, FIDLAR, Brad Tursi and the Walkmen.

In addition to representing Big Deal in North America, BMG will serve as administrator for Germany, UK, Scandinavia, France, Benelux, Spain and Italy.

BMG Rights Management CEO Hartwig Masuch said in a statement, “I am absolutely excited to be working closely with Kenny again, one of the most credible people in the music industry and somebody I’ve known since our days at Warner Chappell in the late ‘80s.”

BMG Chrysalis U.S. president for creative and marketing Laurent Hubert added the deal is a good fit for his company because it pairs the creative vision of BMG and “Kenny, Dave and Jamie, who are proven A&R aces.” He says together Big Deal and BMG will focus on maximizing opportunities for exceptional songwriters.
