The Hives Ordered by Swedish Court to Pay Almost $3 Million to the Cardigans

The Hives have been ordered by a Swedish court to pay 18.5 million Swedish kronor (about $2.9 million) to the Cardigans, the BBC reports. — money they borrowed somewhat unknowingly and unofficially.

The dispute can be traced back to Tambourine Studios, a Swedish recording studio that’s managed both bands’ finances and “routinely shuffled money between the bands’ accounts for a number of years,” according to the BBC. But according to the Hives, they had no idea that this counted as a loan. The Hives are planning to appeal the verdict on the basis that there was “no agreement on the loan, no signed documents, no agreements on interest rates or terms of repayment.”

The BBC reports that “the dispute is part of a long-running row involving many of Sweden’s most successful bands, including Europe, rapper Timbuktu and The Soundtrack of Our Lives.” [Pitchfork]
