As previously reported, Miley Cyrus “Wrecking Ball” smashes its way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, where it’s her first No. 1. Who else makes notable moves on the Hot 100 and other song charts this week?
— Robin Thicke: With a 15th week atop Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, “Blurred Lines” (featuring T.I. and Pharrell) ties the Nielsen-era record for the chart’s longest No. 1 run. Mary J. Blige’s “Be Without You” first set the mark in 2006.
Should “Lines” fend off Jay Z’s “Holy Grail” (featuring Justin Timberlake), which has spent six of its 11 chart weeks at No. 2, and Eminem’s surging “Berzerk” (4-3) next week, it will break its tie with Blige to become the sole longest-leading topper since Nielsen data began powering the chart in December 1992.
On the Hot 100, “Lines” drops 2-4. It reigned for 12 weeks and earned the honor of Billboard’s top song of the summer.
— Imagine Dragons: After reaching No. 59 on the Hot 100 as it scaled the Alternative chart (where it spends a seventh week at its No. 2 peak this week), “Demons” re-enters at a new high at No. 46. It debuts on Mainstream Top 40 at No. 39 and Hot 100 Airplay at No. 57 (20 million all-format audience impressions, up 15%, according to Nielsen BDS).
— Zedd: “Stay the Night,” featuring Paramore’s Hayley Williams, a new track from the deluxe edition of Zedd’s album “Clarity,” due Tuesday (Sept. 24), rides powerful first-week download sales (70,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan) into two top 10 debuts: No. 7 on Dance/Electronic Songs and No. 4 on Dance/Electronic Digital Songs. The collaboration is the Hot Shot Debut on the Hot 100 at No. 51.
— The Neighbourhood: Up 64-58 on the Hot 100, former 11-week Alternative No. 1 “Sweater Weather” completes the longest climb to the Heatseekers Songs summit: 27 weeks. It bests the 23-week ascent of Brantley Gilbert’s “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do” last year.
— Bruno Mars: “Gorilla,” the fourth single from Unorthodox Jukebox, stomps 88-61 on the Hot 100 and begins at No. 61 on Hot 100 Airplay (19 million, up 238%). The song was the first written for the set, with Mars so quickly enamored with its imagery that he put a gorilla (carefully considering a jukebox song choice …) on the album’s cover.
— Romeo Santos: As he makes his first Hot 100 visit (No. 79), he claims his fifth No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs, where “Propuesta Indecente” climbs 4-1. The coronation on the latter chart makes him the artist with the most visits to the chart’s apex this decade. Santos was previously tied with Mana, Don Omar, Prince Royce and Wisin y Yandel, each with four No. 1s since 2010.
The release of the “Propuesta” music video helped catapult the track, as streaming increased by 242% (to 986,000 streams, according to BDS), also giving Santos his first No. 1 on Latin Streaming Songs (7-1).
— Keith Urban: As the country star debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums with “Fuse,” lead single “We Were Us,” with Miranda Lambert, debuts at No. 24 on Hot Country Songs. That’s a career-high launch for Lambert; Urban has debuted at or above No. 24 twice previously. The duet, which starts on the Hot 100 at No. 80, pings Country Digital Songs at No. 8 with 32,000 downloads sold. On the Nielsen BDS-driven Country Airplay ranking, it surges 49-29 in its second week (10 million audience impressions, up 498%), with airplay at 113 of the 142 stations monitored for the chart.
— Arcade Fire: The band heats up Hot Rock Songs, soaring in at No. 14 with “Reflektor.” On the Hot 100, it opens at No. 99, marking the group’s first appearance on the chart. The song previews the band’s fourth studio album of the same name, due Oct. 29. Its last set, The Suburbs, won the Grammy Award for album of the Year in 2011. “Reflektor” storms onto Rock Digital Songs at No. 15 (20,000). Rock Streaming Songs at No. 22 (653,000) and Rock Airplay at No. 25 (3 million).
The band plays the season premiere of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” on Sept. 28.
— Mandisa: The fifth-season “American Idol” contestant scores her second No. 1 on Christian Songs, as “Overcomer” jumps 3-1. She first led with “Stronger” the week of June 18. 2011.
