Vanguard Records is diving deep into the freak folk-spawned nouveau boho scene.

Easy Sound Recording Company, a new imprint based in Los Angeles, announces its launch today. Among the artists on its roster are the San Francisco-based bands Vetiver and Papercuts along with psych-rockers Howlin Rain, garage rock foursome the Donkeys and Rodrigo Amarante of Little Joy and Los Hermanos fame. EDJ, the new project from Fruit Bats mastermind and Shins sideman Eric D. Johnson, will also release new music via the venture, headed by GM and longtime Vanguard A&R exec Stephen Brower.

Although full-lengths are planned for 2014, the first releases by Easy will be a series of 7-inch singles for Record Store Day (April 19). In addition, Papercuts, Vetiver, the Donkeys, and EDJ will appear together at the Noise Pop Festival in San Francisco on Feb. 26.

“I’ve loved these bands for years, and in the last year or so, they all starting hitting my orbit over and over, whether it was seeing Vetiver and Howlin Rain together last New Year’s, Papercuts at Eric’s Huichica Festival, or the Donkeys/Fruit Bats northwest tour last fall,” says Brower. “The possibility of creating a label home for (and with) what was already an amazing congregation of artists is something that just made complete sense.”
