Whether Beyoncé wins any awards or not, the upcoming 2014 MTV Video Music Awards will be her night. In addition to being the most nominated artist this year – with eight nods altogether – Beyoncé is also set to receive MTV’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, honoring an artist’s body of work.
Past Video Vanguard recipients include Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Beastie Boys, Madonna and, of course,Michael Jackson, for whom the award was renamed in 1991. Additionally, Beyoncé will perform at the awards ceremony, which will be broadcast live from the Forum in Inglewood, California at 9 p.m. EST on August 24th.
Beyoncé is nominated for awards in eight categories this year, including Video of the Year for the “Drunk in Love” clip she made with her husband Jay Z. The other categories she’s nominated in include Best Female, Best Collaboration, Best Video With a Social Message, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Choreography and Best Direction. One factor that helped Beyoncé get so many nominations was the creation of 17 short films for the 14 songs on her surprise Beyoncé album late last year.
Since her time in Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé has taken home 11 VMA trophies, including Video of the Year for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” in 2009 and Best Female for “Crazy in Love,” another duet with Jay Z, in 2007.
Other artists with multiple VMA nominations this year include Eminem and Iggy Azalea, who are both up for seven “Moonman” awards. Jay Z, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Pharrell Williams, Ariana Grande, Lorde, Sam Smith, Sia and Avicii are all also nominated in multiple categories.
