Sam Smith 'in talks to record next James Bond theme'

Sam Smith is in talks to record the theme for the next James Bond movie, according to reports.

A story in The Sun today (August 8) claims that Smith has been negotiating with bosses at Bond producers MGM to sing the theme for the next film, which is due for release on October 23, 2015 in the UK and November 6 of the same year in the US.

The report stated that Adele rejected an offer to record the title song, having performed the most recent Bond theme for Skyfall in 2012. It quotes an MGM source as saying: “Sam is our top choice. He has the profile, cool image and an astonishing voice to record a Bond theme.” Smith’s spokesman refused to comment on the story when contacted by NME.

The new Bond film currently has the working title of Bond 24 and will star Daniel Craig in his fourth outing as 007. Also returning are Skyfall director Sam Mendes and screenwriting team John Logan, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. The other confirmed cast are Ralph Fiennes as M, Ben Whishaw as Q, Naomie Harris as Miss Moneypenny and Rory Kinnear as MI6 chief of staff Bill Tanner.

The last British male solo singer to record a Bond theme was Tom Jones with ‘Thunderball’ in 1965, though Wings’ ‘Live And Let Die’ and Duran Duran’s ‘A View To A Kill’ featured Paul McCartney and Simon Le Bon respectively.

Chris Cornell sang 2006’s theme ‘You Know My Name’ for Craig’s first Bond film Casino Royale, while Jack White duetted with Alicia Keys on 2008’s ‘Another Way To Die’ for Quantum Of Solace.
