Tricky Debuts, Calvin Harris Soars On Dance/Electronic Charts

Tricky trots onto Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Albums with Adrian Thaws at No. 9. The set starts with 1,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Thaws is the British trip-hop artist’s sixth charted album, dating to his first, Blowback, which debuted on July 14, 2001, shortly after the list’s inception. Before 2001, Tricky hit the Billboard 200 with three albums, beginning with Pre-Millennium Tension in December 1996. Adrian Thaws references Tricky’s birth name, Adrian Nicholas Matthews Thaws.

‘BLAME’ GAME: Calvin Harris vaults 15-5 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs with “Blame” (featuring John Newman), powered by 55,000 in digital sales and 3.1 million U.S. streams, according to Nielsen BDS. Harris is the first artist to earn four top five hits since the chart’s Jan. 26, 2013, debut.

“Blame” begins at No. 3 on Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs and No. 29 on the overall Streaming Songs chart, taking 74 percent of its streams from Spotify, which used Harris as a focal point in a marketing campaign. The official video for “Blame” also premiered on Vevo during the tracking week (Sept. 12). “Blame” additionally enters Dance/Mix Show Airplay at No. 14 and the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 31.

XCX MARKS THE No. 1 SPOT: Charli XCX chalks up her first No. 1 as a lead artist on Dance/Mix Show Airplay, as “Boom Clap” thunders 2-1. Previously, she reigned as a featured act on Icona Pop’s “I Love It” last year.

REJUVENATED JAYNE: Erika Jayne scores her seventh No. 1 in as many tries on Dance Club Songs with “Painkillr” (2-1). Remixes from DJ-SPIN, DJLW, Victor Dinaire, and Cole Plante, among others, helped pilot “Painkillr” to the top.

“I wrote this record because I was going through a painful time creatively and I totally wanted to numb the pain,” she tells Billboard. “It came from a darker place in my personality.” Thankful for her renewed success, Jayne, whose last chart hit, “Party People (Ignite the World)” was released in November 2011, says, “It’s incredible to come off of a nearly two-year hiatus, trying other things that I ultimately didn’t enjoy, then return to my roots, my core, my authentic self … and hit No. 1!

“I love all of the remixes on this package, I love the entire team behind my brand and I am truly grateful to all the DJs.”
