Iggy Azalea and T.I.

It was a triumphant night for Iggy Azalea, who won her first award ever at the 2014 American Music Awards on Sunday. The Aussie rap sensation, who led the pack with six nominations, beat out Drake and Eminem and took home the prize for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album for her debut The New Classic. She brought up her mentor T.I. while accepting the award from Jamie Foxx.

“This award is the first award I’ve ever won in my entire life, and it means so much to me that it’s for best hip-hop because that’s what inspired me to move to America and pursue my dreams and it’s what helped me when I was a teenager to escape and to get through my life and to better times,” said Iggy.

“It means so much that I can stand here against Eminem and Drake and come out with this. It’s amazing and thank you so much to T.I. for believing in me and to all my fans.”

Following her win, Twitter erupted with comments, some praising Iggy while others weren’t as kind.

“Define a hip-hop album,” tweeted Timbaland’s rap protégée Tink.

Iggy celebrated her win by hitting the stage with Charli XCX to perform “Fancy” and “Beg for It” off her new album Reclassified.
