One Direction has surpassed a billion streams on Spotify, joining Coldplay as only the second British band to accomplish that feat on the streaming music service. According to data provided by Spotify, the boy band reached the milestone last week upon the release of their new album Four. “We congratulate 1D on joining the very select club of artists who are true streaming superstars,” said Kevin Brown, Spotify’s head of label relations.
Spotify also pointed out that 1D is featured on 20 million playlists and that their signature hit, “Story of My Life,” is the service’s most-streamed track ever, with over 90 million plays worldwide. Over the weekend the boys dominated the American Music Awards in Los Angeles, winning three trophies including artist of the year, favorite band/duo/group and favorite pop/rock album, for 2013’s Midnight Memories.
Even with their billion-plus streams, One Direction still has a long way to go to become the most popular artist on Spotify. They’re currently at No. 14 on the list of most-streamed artists, behind U.S. acts Imagine Dragons and Beyonce, and U.K. solo act Ed Sheeran. The all-time streaming king is Eminem, followed by David Guetta, Rihanna and others. Check out the list, which of course is missing a certain singer whose name rhymes with ‘Baelor Mift.’
