Spotify announced on Monday it now has 15 million paid subscribers and 60 million active users worldwide. That figure was at 10 million in May of last year and shows the streaming service is finding success in converting many free users to paying subs.
“We had an amazing 2014 at Spotify and owe it all to you, the music fans who listen, discover, share and celebrate music and artists with us every day of the year,” the company said on its website.
As previously reported, the popularity of streaming actually helped the U.S. music industry grow in 2014, despite having its worst sales year since 1991, when SoundScan (now Nielsen Music) began counting. Last year saw on-demand streaming jump 54 percent to 164 billion songs played, according to Nielsen Music.
