Rumors have run rampant regarding Paul Feig’s (Bridesmaids, The Heat) upcoming Ghostbusters reboot. The biggest headline surrounding the project had to do with his direction for casting. Opting for a different approach from the two previous films, Feig set out to completely reboot the franchise with an all-female cast. Of course, the decision drew a divided response. Some bigots claimed women just aren’t as funny as their male counterparts, while others (like the GOAT Bill Murray) expressed genuine enthusiasm for a gang of female Ghostbusters.

Whether you’re on board for a female-driven Ghostbusters or not, it’s happening and now it seems that the leading four have finally been chosen. Melissa McCarthy, who’s been linked to the film for several months, has officially signed on to star and the studio is in final negotiations with Kristen Wiig and SNL stars Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. With casting almost complete, shooting for the currently untitled reboot is expected to commence this summer in New York City.

A reboot for Ghostbusters had been in the works for some time now. The franchise’s original director Ivan Reitman was initially signed on to direct, with the film’s original cast members (sans an indecisive Murray) all willing to reprise their roles. When Harold Ramis passed away last year, Reitman dropped out of the project and Feig stepped in. Whatever got us to this point, we’re grateful that Feig is reuniting with McCarthy and Wiig and optimistic that SNL‘s leading ladies have what it takes to deliver the laughs while hunting down the supernatural.
