Going into a corporate partnership can be navigating tricky waters, but X Ambassadors‘ Sam Harris was surprised by his band’s involvement in Jeep’s Renegade campaign.
The lead singer of the Ithaca, N.Y. band tells Radio.com that the song not only materialized as a result of Alex da Kid’s prodding, but it found its way onto the national TV ad rather organically.
“Dude, it is the craziest thing,” Harris says of the experience. “I mean, the song just kinda came about with myself and Alex da Kid. He and I are constantly writing stuff. We’re always going back and forth. Sometimes he’ll send me stuff and I’ll write it all on my own. Sometimes he has ideas that he brings to me. This is one of the latter.”
Now considered a go-to producer, Alex da Kid is most famous in the rock world for having worked with Imagine Dragons. But he really made his mark on the music industry while working with Dr. Dre, Nicki Minaj, Eminem and Rihanna. Owning his own label under Interscope, Alex da Kid signed Imagine Dragons, who in turn signed X Ambassadors.
“He called me up and said, ‘I had an idea to write a song called Renegades. Start writing,’” Harris recalled of the track’s origin.
Harris ended up writing four or five versions of the chorus and built the track around their favorite version. “Then all of a sudden I hear that it’s gonna be in a Jeep campaign, and it’s for the Jeep Renegade, and I was [pause] ahh, OK, alright… fate. I see what you’re doing,” Harris says as he looks up and points toward the heavens.
The fact that the band physically appears in the commercial is what’s “really crazy,” says Harris.
After the song was placed in the commercial, the ad agency that created it reached out to Interscope, the band’s label, and explained they wanted to create a spot around the day-in-the-life of a band. Interscope in turn asked X Ambassadors of they’d like to participate. Shot over two days, Harris says they were nervous about the final product but says in the end, he was “pleasantly surprised.”
