During his appearance with Scooter Braun at Fortune’s Brainstorm Tech conference last night, Big Machine chief Scott Borchetta revealed some of the backstory of the Taylor Swift-Apple conflict and rapprochement.
After Apple’s initial announcement that it wouldn’t pay artists during Apple Music’s free trial period, Borchetta noted that he had been communicating with Apple and insisting on payment from the first stream. Swift, who was in Europe, had already sent the letter, he recalled, when she texted him and said “Don’t be mad.” On the contrary, he said, “You don’t have any idea how good your timing is right now.” Braun added that many other artists were invested in the fight Swift and Borchetta were waging, and “Taylor pushed it over the edge.”
