As carefully calculated and smartly packaged as Taylor Swift is, Miley Cyrus is improvisational and raw. The music industry needs more of both kinds of artists. Each attracts legions of fans and neither is afraid to criticize the establishment.  But, lets face it, Miley is way more fun to watch, and she didn’t disappoint last night.

Miley Cyrus released a surprise album last night during MTV’s Video Music Awards.  Perhaps most surprising of all is that the entire album is available to stream for free on her web site via Soundcloud.

Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz” is the 23 track follow-up to her 2013 multi-platinum “Bangerz,” and is both classic Cyrus and a decidedly non-commercial release that showcases her artistic freedom both in song and with its method of release.

“That’s what I’ve got the luxury to do,” Cyrus, now 22, told the New York Times. “I can just do what I want to do, and make the music I want to make.”

At the start of her post-Disney career,  “People were like, ‘Well, she’s got some good people twisting the knobs to help her break out,’” said Cyrus “Now it’s been long enough where they’re like, ‘No one’s telling her what to do… I’m not a chicken with my head cut off.”
