Taylor Swift edges out Neil Diamond to earn the top ranking on the Hot Tours tally (see list, below), taking No. 1 for the second consecutive week based on box-office sales from her ongoing 1989 World Tour.
Sold-out performances in Salt Lake City and Denver add $4.4 million to her world tour’s overall gross of $134 million from 40 shows in North America and Europe, reported since the tour kicked off in May.
Diamond follows at No. 2 in the ranking with a $4.3 million take from three concerts at London’s O2 Arena. The concerts were part of his Live Nation-produced tour’s European trek during June and July that wrapped with a final London performance on July 26. Attendance at the O2 totaled 36,352 for all three shows, including the concerts on July 14 and 16.
The veteran singer began the year with a 31-city jaunt through North America that racked up $35 million at the box office from 319,549 sold seats at 34 shows. Next on the schedule for Diamond will be an October and November run through nine cities in Australia and New Zealand to wrap his touring for the year.
Billy Joel takes third in the Hot Tours ranking with the fifth and final performance during his summer stadium run through U.S. markets, a concert on Sept. 5 at AT&T Park in San Francisco. The event drew a sellout crowd of 37,064 fans, earning $3.9 million at the box office. His first stadium show of the summer was on July 16, a return engagement at Boston’s Fenway Park with a crowd of 36,034 and $4.1 million in sales, topping the gross from his concert last summer at the ballpark by $340,000.
A sold out show at Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium followed on July 25 along with stadium performances at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park on Aug. 13 and Wrigley Field in Chicago on Aug. 27. He had previously performed at the both the Philadelphia and Chicago stadiums twice: in 2009 (with Elton John) and also last summer.
Along with the stadium dates, Joel has sold out concerts in nine American cities already in 2015 and has arena dates booked in three more markets during the remainder of the year. He also extended his monthly residency at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, begun in 2014, into this year with one concert booked at the arena during each month. Overall touring revenue in 2015 totals $45 million for the artist from almost half a million sold seats at 18 reported shows.
