On the most recent Billboard 200 chart (dated Nov. 14), 5 Seconds of Summerscored its second No. 1, as its new effort Sounds Good Feels Good arrived atop the tally. It was one of four new arrivals in the top 10, as it was joined by Carrie Underwood’s Storyteller (No. 2), Blake Shelton’s Reloaded: 20 #1 Hits (No. 5) and Andrea Bocelli’s Cinema (No. 10).
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).
Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the Nov. 7 chart:
— Adele, 21 – No. 11 — Just outside the top 10 is an album that is no stranger to the upper reaches of the chart: Adele’s 21. The set zooms from No. 79 to No. 11 with 28,000 units (up 369 percent) ad 16,000 in pure album sales (up 412 percent). The vault comes in the wake of the release of Adele’s new single “Hello,”which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. If 21 returns to the top 10, it will collect its 82nd nonconsecutive week in the region.
Further down the list, Adele’s first album, 19, re-enters at No. 36 with 12,000 units (up 341 percent) and 7,000 copies sold (up 337 percent).
Adele may soon have three albums in the top 40 at the same time, as her third album, 25, is scheduled for release on Nov. 20 and is forecast to have a blockbuster debut.
— Rod Stewart, Another Country – No. 20 — Rod Stewart nabs his 42nd chart entry on the Billboard 200 as Another Country debuts at No. 20 (earning 19,000 equivalent-album units, nearly all from pure album sales). Stewart made his solo debut on the list nearly 46 years ago when The Rod Stewart Album bowed at No. 200 on the tally dated Dec. 13, 1969 (it peaked at No. 139 the following March). Another Country, his second Capitol Records release, also starts at No. 10 on the Top Album Sales chart.
— Chris Tomlin, Adore: Christmas Songs of Worship – No. 31 — Chris Tomlin nets his ninth top 40-charting album, as his new holiday effort Adore: Christmas Songs of Worship, enters at No. 31.
It also bows at No. 1 on the Top Holiday Albums chart, giving the singer his second leader on the seasonal tally. (The Top Holiday Albums chart is published on a weekly basis from October through early January each Christmas season.)
Tomlin previously led the list for two weeks, in 2009 and 2011 with Glory In the Highest: Christmas Songs of Worship. (Adore also enters at No. 1 on Top Christian Albums, the Christian superstar’s sixth leader.)
— Soundtrack, Jem and the Holograms – No. 54 — Based on the 1980’s cartoon TV series of the same name, the new film adaptation’s soundtrack starts with 8,000 units at No. 54. The animated show, which was laden with original music, surprisingly never released a soundtrack.
— Metallica, Metallica – No. 73 — Thanks to an iTunes promotion, Metallica’s self-titled set climbs 195-73 (6,000 units; up 88 percent) to its highest rank since Aug. 11, 2012 (No. 51). The album spent four weeks at No. 1 in 1991 — the band’s first of five chart-toppers. With its rebound into the top 100, the album earns its 233rd week in the region: extending its record as the album with the most weeks in the top 100 since Nielsen Music began powering the list’s ranking on May 25, 1991.
