Vinyl Record

In case you hadn’t already guessed, music streaming is on the rise and most physical music sales (CDs) are on the decline. But would you have guessed Vinyl sales are up 56%?

According to BFI (British Phonographic Industry) music consumption in total rose 4% in the first half of 2015, and during the same time frame vinyl sales were said to have risen 56% over the previous year!

What does this mean for us musicians, producers and DJs? Well, with the recent launch of Apple Music only likely to further boost the numbers, streaming music services can’t be ignored. 11.5 billion streams were measured in first 6 months of 2015… with 14.8 billion tracks streamed during the whole of 2014.

With CD sales in slight decline (down 4.4% during 2015 year on year) and vinyl on the increase it appears music fans are still opting to collect and own music. But, how long will this last with the trend towards streaming continuing to steam-roller other music mediums? Will owning vinyl records and CDs (even owning music downloads) soon be considered a niche hobby for die-hard fans and eccentric music lovers?
