This morning, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the long-awaited iPhone 5. The smartphone boasts a bigger screen, a faster chip and a thinner frame, and it will be available on September 21st.
During the press conference in San Francisco, Apple chief marketing officer Phil Schiller referred to the iPhone 5 as the thinnest smartphone on the market. Made entirely out of aluminum and glass, the iPhone 5 is lighter than its predecessors. Its camera comes with a panorama mode, a low-light setting and face-detection capability for up to 10 people. Users can also take photos while shooting videos and the front-facing camera has been upgraded to HD.
“This camera makes the world just a more beautiful place,” Schiller said at the conference.
The company also revealed that iTunes is getting a brand-new redesign with iCloud backup storage built into it. In the new, more visual iTunes, album art plays a more significant role in browsing through artists and a new feature called “Up Next” works like the queue feature in Spotify. Additionally, artists can now share photos directly to users via their iTunes libraries, a probable indication that “Ping is now dead,” according to TechCrunch. Rumors of an Apple music streaming service that would compete with Pandora were neither confirmed nor denied.
The new iTunes upgrade will be available in October. [RollingStone]
